Fiji is probably the first place that people think of when they
are looking for the ultimate place to get away from it all. Its
reputation as being one of the original paradise islands in the
Pacifica cannot be countered, and visiting Fiji would simply make
you fall in love with the place.
Location-wise, Fiji lies about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to
New Zealand. It is considered as a Melanesian country lying on the
South Pacific Ocean, which is actually an archipelago made up of
more than 330 islands. Out of these, however, only 110 are
inhabited.
Back in the days when real pirates and ship captains battled it out
in the sea, Fiji earned a reputation of being the Cannibal Isles
because of the treacherous waters that needed to be sailed in order
to get there. These days, however, Fiji is enjoying a prime spot in
world tourism as being a tropical island paradise in the Pacific.
As small as the number of inhabited islands in Fiji are, there are
actually only two main islands where the population reside: Viti
Levu and Vanua Levu. Most of the residents are Fijians and
Indo-Fijians. When you have a chance to interact with them, you will
find out that they are one of the friendliest people in the world.
Their ethnic culture is also something to marvel at, with dances and
rituals that will appeal to any foreign tourist as they are welcomed
with a warm "Bula!" greeting into the islands.
There's More to Fiji than Meets the Eye
For a typical tourist who has never been to Fiji, perhaps you will
have an idea about what the islands look like when you view films
like "Cast Away" and "Blue Lagoon". It's the proverbial white sand
beaches, lush islands and blue waters as a perfect getaway – but
there is definitely more to Fiji than that.
Aside from the warm friendliness of the locals, there are plenty of
other sightseeing spots that will interest you. Located in the north
western part of the largest island in Fiji is the Yasawa Group, a
chain of volcanic islands. If you want to go from one end of the
islands to another, all you need to do is take a catamaran ride
across the waters. The resorts surrounding these volcanic islands
are what the locals claim to be the real Fiji.
If you want to immerse yourself in the local culture of Fiji, you
should definitely journey to Viti Levu and Vanua Levu. Although Viti
Levu does not have beach destinations which are as gorgeous as those
found in the other islands, it does serve a function of running the
small island nation of Fiji. What you can do here instead is have a
tour of the national parks or have a glimpse of a waterfall and one
of the local villages in the area. It's also home to Suva which is
the perfect spot to immerse yourself in the local culture.
Meanwhile, Vanua Levu or Big Island is where diving enthusiasts
should be because it has one of the most well-preserved reefs in the
South Pacific.
Be it the enigmatic nightlife, the idyllic beach destinations or the
Fijian culture that you would like to experience and learn more
about – visiting Fiji is definitely something that you should make
part of your travel wish list. |
